Museum De Waag: Flowing through time. Deventer, city of the IJssel
How was Deventer built? Which inhabitants played a role in the city’s history? How important was the river IJssel in the development of Deventer? These and many other questions are answered during the exhibition ‘Flowing Through Time. Deventer, City of the IJssel’ at Museum De Waag. The exhibition, which visualises and gives a lively account of the city’s history in five episodes, is open from 23 June 2017. Specially developed 3D reconstructions and animations visualise the city of Deventer as it was in the past.
The rich history of Deventer
Being one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Deventer boasts a rich history. Set in what was no more than a river landscape 1250 years ago, Deventer has developed into a vibrant city with an impressive heritage. Nowhere does the city’s history come so much to life as in Flowing through Time. Deventer, City of the IJssel in Museum De Waag. Unique artefacts from the heritage collection, 3D reconstructions and historically accurate animations bring the past back to life. Visitors are guided through the city’s historical highs by well-known persons from the past, such as Lebuinus, Catharina Simons, Meginhard the Saxon, Herbert Dapper and Leo Halle. Especially for this exhibition, historical images of the city were developed in augmented reality, giving visitors a clear picture of what the settlement established by Lebuinus at the end of the ninth century, the Brink as it was in 900 AD and the Wellekade in 1560 AD, looked like. The exhibition is scheduled to return to Museum De Waag every summer, featuring a wide range of unique artefacts, stories, historical personalities and 3D reconstructions.
Free audio tours and guided tours
An elaborate audio tour is available at the museum, and visitors can join free step-in tours on Sundays at 12.30 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. Museum De Waag also offers an audio tour through the city centre by way of a corresponding app. This tour links the exhibition to the numerous historical attractions of the city. The exhibition Flowing through time. Deventer, City of the IJssel in Museum De Waag is open until 7 January 2018 at Brink 56 in Deventer. The museum is open every day from 11.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m. (closed on Mondays).
