Figure from the Magistrate

Gerard Ter Borch (Zwolle, 1617 - Deventer, 1681)

In the 17th century, it was common for councillors to have their portraits painted together. Interestingly, mayors or sworn congregation almost never had their portraits painted. The magistrate of Deventer made an exception in 1667. They naturally turned to Gerard Ter Borch (Zwolle, 1617 - Deventer, 1681), who was not born in Deventer but had been active there since 1654. He was not only a famous portrait painter, but had also just become a member of the Gezworen Gemeente, a kind of city council. Ter Borch mainly painted on small formats.

The oval portrait created by Ter Borch bears a strong resemblance to Joan van Suchtelen. He was governor of Deventer for almost 19 years. Van Suchtelen is also depicted in the famous group portrait of the magistrate by Ter Borch from 1667, which hangs in the town hall. Thanks to a detailed description of the painting, we know who the members of the magistrate were at the time and what they looked like.
