Forest landscape with Latona and the Lycian peasants

Bartholomeus Breenbergh (1598-1657)

Shortly after his return to Amsterdam, Breenbergh painted some more in the style of Flemish and German painters such as Bril and Elsheimer. We see that in this painting, for example, in the use of colour and upholstery. In this depiction from Ovid's Metamorphoses, we see Latona, or Letho, pronouncing her curse on the peasants who prevent her and her children from drinking some river water. The gods answer her request and turn the peasants into croaking frogs.
