Deventer history

Permanent set-up

On the second floor, in a permanent display, we show a bird's-eye view of Deventer's history.

This covers the city's genesis, the Hanseatic period with its trade and markets, as well as the industries of silversmiths and the famous Deventer honeycake makers. Deventer then became a true industrial city with, among other things, tin and textiles. You will also find special objects from this period.

This leather wallet presumably belonged to a wealthy merchant.

Exposed: The siege of DeventerDeventer was the scene of a protracted siege during the Eighty Years' War. Count Rennenberg's State troops surrounded the city. After months of fighting, the Spanish troops finally surrendered. This animation shows how the siege took place step by step. The painting is a true source of information. The battles have been ingeniously incorporated into an overall picture by the unknown painter.

Deventer during Rennenberg's siege in 1578.

With the help of an animation, we give a better picture of the course of the battle. The animation explains this 16th-century visual report. With the minitour 'The siege of Deventer in 1578' in the 3Deventer app, you can closely follow the battle for the Noordenberg tower on location on Gibsonstraat. Various 3D reconstructions show what this important defensive tower of the city looked like at the time and the bitter battle that was fought here.

This presentation aims to draw attention to the strength of Museum De Waag's permanent collection and has been created with support from the Vereniging Rembrandt and the Turing Foundation.
